سنگ چخماق یک وسیله قدیمی و موثر برای روشن کردن آتش است. این وسیله یکی از نیازهای ضروری علاقه مندان به سفر و طبیعت گردی هست. بدلیل وجود باد و بعضا شرایط نامساعد جوی در اکثر مناطق تفریحی و کوهستانی روشن کردن کبریت در اکثر موارد مقدور نخواهد بود. اگر سنگ چخماق داشته باشید قادر خواهید بود در هوای طوفانی و نامساعد هم آتش روشن کنید تنها باید قسمت فلزی را بر روی قسمت دیگر بکشید تا جرقههای قوی برای روشن کردن آتش در طبیعت را در اختیار داشته باشید. در ابتدا باید چند بار یک وسیلهٔ آهنی (مانند چاقو) روکش روی سنگ را از بین ببرید. یک تکه دستمال، پنبه، چوب یا خس و خاشاک خشک را برروی سطح قرار دهید سپس سنگ چخماق را به آن بچسبانید و با یک وسیلهٔ آهنی (توصیه میشود از چاقوی تیز استفاده کنید) برروی سنگ چخماق بکشید. بعد از چند بار تلاش آتش روشن خواهد شد.
